Series <Luminous City> 2023-2024

The <Luminous City> series expresses the image of a city glowing with artificial light using a structure of building materials (stainless steel, cement, glass, etc.) combined with monitors, billboards, and LED lights. The image is expressed through the light emission of the video elements that make the image appear on the monitor, and the light emitted in this way is reflected or absorbed on the surface of materials such as the frame, mirrored stainless steel surface, cement, and acrylic that make up the structure of the work, blurring the boundary between the inside and the outside. The image and structure of the luminous city have a different presence from the world of natural light that flows from the sun and fills our vision by illuminating our world.

The artist's world of works that expresses the psychological world through the spatial combination and composition of light and color is influenced by the movement of sunlight that comes in through the window of the small room where he lived in the early days of his study abroad facility and slowly passes by as if brushing the floor and walls of the room. The tongue of light is the artist's tactile sense of the movement of light at that time, and the dual emotions of fear and warmth of sunlight that flies a huge distance that cannot be measured by the sun and slowly moves through a small space. The tactile sensation of licking and passing through the movement of light, a visual medium, can be a sensory confusion through fear of the giant Other.

The body and the illusion of the city realized with light and images in the video go beyond personal sensory experience and evoke the artist's illusion as an individual standing in the network of historical and social contexts. This illusion expands to the architectural space, light, and urban images that he has consistently explored since his early work, and just as Walter Benjamin's Passagenwerk urban experience was abstracted as a relic as the archetype of modernity (ur Phenomena), the physical structuring of the urban experience leads to a consideration of LED artificial lighting and images, which are the intersection of desire and divinity.
 

<Luminous City> 시리즈는 인공빛으로 빛나는 도시 이미지를 모니터와 전광판, LED조명과 결합한 건축재료(스테인리스 스틸, 시멘트, 유리 등)의 구조로 표현하고 있다. 모니터에 이미지를 떠오르게 하는 영상 소자의 발광을 통해 이미지로 발현되며  이렇게 내뿜어진 빛은 작품의 구조를 이루는 프레임, 미러스텐 표면, 시멘트, 아크릴과 같은 재료의 표면에 반사되거나 흡수되며 안과 바깥의 경계를 모호하게 한다. 발광하는 도시의 이미지와 구조는 태양으로부터 흘러나와 우리의 세계를 빛내며 우리의 시각을 채우는 자연광의 세계와는 다른 존재감을 갖는다.

빛과 색의 공간적 결합과 구성을 통해 심리적 세계를 표현하는 작가의 작품세계는 유학시설 초기에 거주하던 작은 방의 창을 통해 들어와 방의 바닥과 벽을 서서히 스치듯이 지나가는 햇빛의 움직임이 중요한 계기로 작용한다. 빛의 혀는 이때 빛의 움직임에 대한 작가의 촉각적 감각이며 태양으로 가늠할 수 없는 거대한 거리를 날아와 작은 공간을 서서히 이동하는 햇빛의 공포감과 따스함의 이중적인 감정이었다. 시각적 매개인 빛의 움직임을 핥고 지나가는 촉각적인 감각으로 경험하는 것은 거대한 타자에 대한 공포를 통한 감각적 혼동일수 있다.

영상 속 빛과 이미지로 구현된 신체와 도시의 환영은 개인적인 감각 경험을 넘어 역사적 사회적 맥락의 그물망에 선 개인으로서의 작가의 환영을 불러일으킨다. 이 환영은 초기 작업에서부터 꾸준히 탐구해온 건축공간과 빛, 도시 이미지로 확장되며, 발터 벤야민의 Passagenwerk 도시경험이 근대성의 원형상(ur Phenomena)으로서의 유물로서 추상화되었듯이 도시 경험에 대한 물리적 구조화 작업은 욕망과 신성의 교차점인 LED 인공조명과 이미지에 대한 고찰로 이어진다.
